Hi and welcome to Kids Yoga @ the Dharma Shala ,,,,,
Our aim is to make the yoga fun and approachable for the children.
This means that the classes are a little different to adult’s. The idea is to
develop a practice around games, music or sound, an awareness of one’s self
others, and partner work. Children love make believe, using props and activities
where they can learn the yoga poses in.
Tree pose (Vrksasana)
This term we have been using props and games to engage the idea of yoga and to
introduce the studio to the children. They have used their breath to keep
feathers up in the air. Lined up the yoga belts to walk over, heal-toe, and
balanced an eye bag on their heads. Used toy animals to help us remember poses
and have turned into animals with our bodies. We have used our yoga mats and
the spaces around us to help us respect each other’s space.
Down dog (Ardha Mukha Savasana)
The children have also been introduced to relaxation and concentration. I read
stories to guide them into stillness, which can lead to a meditation practice.
They have also loved the rainbow cards we use to finish the class each week.
These cards have different positive affirmations written on them. The idea is
simply to look at the card, read it, and remember it for the week. They love
these cards!
om
Each class begins and ends with 3 “oms”. In yoga ”om” is defined as the universal
sound within us and around us. I simply use it with kids because they love making
sound, it stimulates their throats and it joins us together as a group.
When finishing class we say Namaste’, which is a Hindu greeting, meaning ‘I
honour the light in you’. For the kids it is a strange word with lots of fun in its
sound, and a way to thank each other for a great class together.
We do this with our hands in prayer position, but this does not mean we are
praying. Yoga is not a religion. Prayer, or Anjali Mudra is uniting our two sides
together towards our centre (the heart) and learning to be able to look into that
space within us.
Anjali Mudra (hands in prayer position)
We hope this gives you an idea of what your children have been doing in classes
so far.
Feel free to ask either of us any questions.
